Winter at GardenHaus: What We’ve Been Up To
Winter has officially arrived in Asheville, and while the mountains are taking on that quiet seasonal gray, things at GardenHaus are anything but quiet, and anything but gray! We’re deep in the rhythm of winter gardening, refreshing porch pots, sourcing evergreens, and gearing up for a December, chock full of holiday installs across homes and businesses.
Whether you’re looking to keep your outdoor spaces lively this season or you’re used to letting things rest quietly over the winter, here’s a little update and a little inspiration from your GardenHaus gals.
What We Do With Porch Pots in the Winter:
Have you loved your summer or fall containers so much that you weren’t quite ready to say goodbye? Good news: Winter porch pots can be just as beautiful, and with the right selections, they can last all season long. Here’s how we approach winter gardening in Asheville at GardenHaus:
1. Keep the Structure, Update the Season
Your pots don’t need to be emptied just because it’s cold. We often reuse the existing soil and root structure (when appropriate) and build new seasonal designs right on top. Hardy evergreens, winterberry, magnolia, and cut juniper add instant depth and color.
2. Lean Into Winter Interest
Winter is all about texture. Think Evergreens like cedars, pine, mini spruce, wintergreen, red twig dogwood, and holly’s. These elements stand up beautifully to cold mountain nights. We also often add violas, pansies and december blooming lenten roses, which give pots a few extra weeks of bloom time before fading to backround follige.
3. Add a Touch of Holiday Magic
For December installs there’s always the option to add on Holiday Glam Ups. These are temporary Holiday installs that add Christmas magic to your already lovely winter pots. Christmas trees, Wreaths, Garlands, and more. There are only a couple slots left for Holiday Glam ups, so reach out today if you’d like to be placed on the list.
Gardening in Asheville: Why Winter Matters
Winter gardening in Asheville is a little different from other regions. Our mix of 7b–8a weather means your containers can stay lively even when temps dip. This is the perfect season to set the tone for your porch, entryway, or storefront with pieces that feel intentional, lush, and welcoming.
Winter is when we have enough time to really plan and source the coming year’s planters. Formulating an end goal design and plan to work towards that vision. Often working with lower costs during “off season”, winter is the perfect time to source planters.
Plus, well-designed winter porch pots carry you gracefully from December through early spring when we’ll be delivering your tulips and other early bloomers.
What We’ve Been Up To Lately
If you’ve noticed us popping in and out of driveways or tucked under porches with giant bundles of evergreens… Here’s a peek behind the scenes:
Installing winter porch pots for homes all around Asheville
Sourcing loads of magnolia, spruce, juniper, and ilex from our favorite regional growers
Prepping for a December packed with holiday installs: garland, wreaths, window boxes, entryway arches, you name it
Adding new GardenHaus subscription clients who want seasonal refreshes without the hassle
Styling storefront planters for local businesses gearing up for holiday foot traffic
It’s the coziest, busiest, most magical kind of chaos and we’re loving every minute.
